Directed in 2012 by Lucas Lecomte, this short film with a silver-halide aesthetic opens the doors to Michel Marinus's studio. More than a simple testimony, it's an intimate capture of the act of creation, revealing the true alchemy that takes place on the canvas.
The builder of matterThe video highlights the almost sculptural dimension of the artist's work. Even before the intervention of color, the artwork is born through volume. Using a spatula, Michel Marinus kneads and applies a thick paste—based on plaster of Paris—creating a raw, organic relief, similar to a mineral geography or a crater in formation.
The blooming of lightThen comes the time for pigments. The canvas is first imbued with a deep blue on its edges, trapping the energy in the center of the painting. It is there, in the hollows of the matter, that the artist infuses luminous yellows and carmine reds. The relief catches the paint, and the heart of the canvas suddenly seems to ignite, vibrating with a light of its own.
